Anne B. Newman, MD, MPH

Distinguished Professor Emerita
University of Pittsburgh, United States

Dr. Newman is an epidemiologist and clinical trialist addressing determinants of physical and cognitive function in aging as well as successful aging and longevity. She received her medical degree and master’s in public health degree from the University of Pittsburgh, then completed her internal medicine residency and geriatric medicine fellowship in Pittsburgh. While leading several clinical geriatric programs, she contributed to the establishment of the Cardiovascular Health Study, a long term cohort study of older adults funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. She went on to conduct other ground breaking, long-term cohort studies in older adults including the Health, Aging and Body Composition Study, the Long Life Family Study, and the Study of Muscle, Mobility and Aging, all funded by the National Institute on Aging (NIA). Her work in clinical trials has addressed weight loss, physical activity, and medications designed to promote health span in older adults. Trials include the Lifestyles for Independence in the Elderly (LIFE) trial, the Aspirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly (ASPREE), and the Enabling Reduction of Low-Grade Inflammation in Seniors (ENRGISE) trial. She currently leads the ongoing Reducing Inflammation for Greater Health Trial (RIGHT) being conducted by the Aging Institute at Pitt. Her work is highly cited, with over 1000 publications, an h-index of 195, and is currently ranked 17th in the US among women scientists. She was co-editor of the book, Epidemiology of Aging and has written 13 book chapters, including chapters on “Epidemiology of Aging” in major medical textbooks. An associate editor of the Journal of Gerontology: Medical Science for many years, she served as editor-in-chief from 2016-2020. She has served as a member of the Board of Scientific Counselors and the Clinical Trials Advisory Panel of the NIA. She currently serves on the National Scientific Advisory Council of the American Federation for Aging. She recently stepped down as UPMC Chair in Geroscience; Distinguished Professor, Epidemiology; Professor, Medicine, and Clinical and Translational Science; Director, Center for Aging and Population Health; and Clinical Director, Aging Institute of UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh.
