Sara Espinoza, MD, MSc

Dr. Espinoza is a dual board-certified internist and geriatrician, and physician scientist. Dr. Espinoza received her medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine and completed her internal medicine residency at the University of Rochester Medical Center Strong Memorial Hospital. She is Professor of Medicine and Director of the Center for Translational Geroscience at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Her research focuses on improving the geriatric syndrome of frailty and healthspan in older adults utilizing a translational approach and clinical trials. She leads a randomized placebo-controlled trial of metformin to reduce frailty in older adults with pre-diabetes. Related studies will examine the effect of metformin on several hallmarks of aging, including cellular senescence, mitochondrial function, and epigenetic modifications, as well as biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Dr. Espinoza provides clinical care in both inpatient and outpatient settings and has experience in developing and evaluating novel models of clinical care for older adults. She precepts medical students, residents, and fellows in both clinical and research settings.
